Bruce Lanphear, MD

Bruce Lanphear, MD, MPH, a Professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, led studies used by federal agencies to set standards for lead in air, water and house dust. His studies led federal agencies around the world to conclude that no amount of lead is safe. Lanphear produces videos to show how our health is inextricably linked with the environment and elevate disease prevention.

Why was an update to the Commission necessary?

An update was necessary because the burden of disease from pollutants and toxic chemicals is so great that it is imperative we monitor activities to control or eliminate pollutants. Moreover, new evidence on the contribution of lead to coronary heart disease deaths - the leading cause of death worldwide - shows that we have grossly underestimated the impact of pollutants on the global burden of disease.

What is the main change you would like to highlight?

The increase in the GBD from lead toxicity and coronary heart disease.

What’s next?

We anticipate that IHME will expand the GBD from lead-induced coronary heart disease and that the GBD from pollution will increase substantially. Reducing lead exposure is especially important in LMIC to reduce the growing burden of disease from lead and other industrial pollutants.
