Howard Hu, MD, ScD
Professor & Flora L. Thornton Chair, Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California
Dr. Hu, a physician-scientist-epidemiologist, has been a tenured Professor, Director, Department Chair, and Dean in positions at Harvard (1990-2006), the University of Michigan (2006-2012), and the University of Toronto (2012-2018). He is currently Professor and the Flora L. Thornton Chair of the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences in the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. In terms of research, Dr. Hu has led international teams investigating the environmental, nutritional, social, genetic and epigenetic determinants of adult chronic disease and impaired child development in population-based studies based in the U.S., Mexico, India, China, and elsewhere around the world. His teams’ work has been continuously funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and has generated over 350 publications and won many awards. Most recently, he co-initiated and continues to lead the Global Burden of Disease-Pollution, Climate and Health Initiative; and is currently leading several COVID-19 cohort studies based in the Los Angeles area. Dr. Hu currently serves on the Board of Directors of Pure Earth, and in the past, has served on 4 fact-finding missions, on the Board of Directors, and remains on the Advisory Board for Physicians for Human Rights (Nobel Peace Prize, 1997).
